The Student Emergency Fund assists UNC Charlotte students by providing financial support when they need assistance with unexpected and unavoidable life emergencies that cause unforeseen expenses. The Student Emergency Fund is designed to provide needed financial relief for situations such as accidents, illness, death of a family member, fire damage, need for temporary housing, natural or manmade disaster or pandemics. While there is not an exhaustive list of expenses the funds are designed to cover, funds may be used for temporary housing, transportation, food, unforeseen medical expenses, safety needs, or essential academic expenses such as textbooks, classroom or lab equipment, or educational supplies. The Student Emergency Fund is not designed to cover tuition and fees on a student’s University account. Relief funds do not have to be repaid.
Applicants must have an immediate financial hardship resulting from an emergency, accident, or other critical incident. The expense must be unexpected, unforeseen, and of an urgent nature. Applicants must be currently enrolled students, undergraduate or graduate students, and taking at least one credit hour in the current semester. All other resources, including short-term loans through Financial Aid must have been considered and are either insufficient, unavailable, or not available in a timely manner.
Students are eligible for a one-time funding award of up to $500. Should an unusual circumstance arise, such as a natural or manmade disaster or pandemic, exceptions may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Applicants must complete the Student Emergency Fund application in its entirety and submit supporting documentation, where appropriate and possible. Applications that are not complete and do not have a student ID number provided will not be processed. Documentation may include, but is not limited to, unemployment paperwork, proof of loss of job, medical bills, bank statement, lease agreement with rent information, etc. It is the expectation that all statements, information, and documentation provided are truthful and accurate at the time of application.
A committee composed of representatives from Student Assistance and Support Services (SASS), Financial Aid, the University Scholarship Office, and the Division of University Advancement, will review all applications for the Student Emergency Fund within 48 business hours of application receipt. Eligibility requirements (noted above) will be reviewed, along with the level of need and availability of funds. The committee will make a determination on whether the applicant qualifies and the appropriate funding amount to be awarded. Applicants will receive an email to their UNC Charlotte email address with the committee’s determination. Please note that the committee may not be able to fulfill all requests due to availability of funds.
Disbursement of Funds
Any monies awarded through the Student Emergency Fund will not be applied to a student’s University account. Funding will be disbursed via direct deposit. It is important that applicants log into their my.uncc.edu account to verify that their direct deposit information is accurate and/or to enroll in direct deposit. Directions can be found here. Please note that if a student does not have a bank account, the funds can be disbursed via check, although the turnaround time for disbursement will be longer.
Student Assistance and Support Services will have direct oversight of the Student Emergency Fund, in collaboration with Financial Aid, the University Scholarship Office, and the Division of University Advancement.
